India became a sovereign democratic republic on the 26th of January, 1950. That is a momentous date not only in the history of India but in the modern history of the world. On that date one-sixth of the global population, living in India, became complete masters of their own destiny and adopted a democratic form of government with universal adult franchise and rule of law.
