DO letter from Secretary, Ministry of Ayush

The Embassy of India is pleased to share an updated comprehensive dossier entitled, ‘Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) Safety Dossier 2.0’ which has been meticulously prepared by the high level expert group assigned by the Ministry of Ayush (Government of India) to provide an in-depth understanding of the scientific basis of safety profile of Ashwagandha.

As you are aware, Ashwagandha is a widely used herb in Ayurvedic medicine,  known for its various health benefits. However, recent concerns have been raised by several EU countries regarding its safety. The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (DVFA) has already imposed a ban based on a report from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), and similar concerns have emerged in the EU, Sweden, The Netherlands and the UK. These concerns have significantly impacted the perception and regulatory status of Ashwagandha in these regions.

The attached dossier aims to address these concerns by providing detailed analysis of existing scientific literature, and safety assessments. By consolidating reliable and credible scientific information, it offers a comprehensive resource that will assist stakeholders, policymakers, regulators, and the public in making informed decisions.
