GLOBAL DESIGN COMPETITION FOR REDEVELOPMENT AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE
INDIAN RESEARCH STATION MAITRI IN ANTARCTICA
PROJECT MAITRI-II

The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) is pleased to announce a Global Design
Competition for the redevelopment of Maitri Station in Antarctica. Professional architects,
architectural firms with in-house engineering capabilities, engineering firms with in-house architects,
or consortiums of architectural and engineering firms (collectively referred to as Entities) with a proven
record of executing projects in polar regions are invited to participate.
The project scope includes the conceptualization of energy efficient building structures, life support
utilities and facilities and the preparation of a master plan for the redevelopment of the area with
dispersed structures. It also involves the alignment of roads, water and fuel pipelines and cable trays,
all with due consideration for the harsh Antarctic climate and the fragile polar ecology and
environment. The design must optimize the use of the undulating topography and address
architecture, aesthetics, functionality, safety, and environmental impact.
Three shortlisted designs will be awarded significant prizes, with the top design receiving the
consultancy service contract for detailed designing and construction oversight of the new buildings
and associated infrastructure for the new Maitri Station, referred to as Project Maitri-II.
Submissions will be evaluated based on several criteria: experience in designing polar structures,
environmental considerations, the master plan layout, architecture and aesthetics, functionality and
safety, as well as the quality of documentation and presentation.
